New Year’s Greetings

The beginning of a new year is usually a time of optimism and hope. We look for signs that the prospects for the coming year will be better than what occurred in the old year. Unfortunately, such is not the case this year as the surge in Coronavirus infections has skyrocketed heralding even more difficult times for not only the health of people everywhere, but that of economies, too.

Shutdowns, lockdowns, and requests for self-restraint have been declared globally as the death toll climbs and countermeasures seem to be having less than the desired effect. A number of vaccines have been developed, approved, and are in the process of being distributed, but it is still too soon to determine whether they will be efficacious[1] or not. In some countries, such as the United States, there seems to be problems not only with distribution of the vaccine, but also a reluctance of many to receive the vaccination because little is known of whether there will be possible side effects or not.

Perhaps more alarming, though, was the shameful attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters which can only be described as an act of sedition[2] by Trump and those around him. Trump’s absurd insistence that the election was stolen from him has repeatedly been proven to be false, yet he continues to spread the lie that he won the election which only serves to instigate Trump zealots[3] to attempt insurrection[4]. This type of behavior is akin to Fascism[5]. Fascists rely on mobs and goon squads to commit acts of sedition. Mussolini had his black shirts and Hitler had his brown shirts; Trump has his Trump supporters. The parallels of behavior are clearly evident. They wear apparel that allows them to stand out and proudly proclaim their blind devotion to their leader.

Even as of this writing the drama in America is still unfolding. Trump remains unapologetic for inciting the rioters and shows no sign of desisting in his fascistic behavior. He is a self-deluded sociopath unwilling to face realities that contradict his wishes or views. The current concern is that Trump’s deranged supporters will attempt more seditious acts between now and perhaps during the inauguration of Biden on January 20.

The spike of Covid infections and the seditious behavior of Trump have gotten this year off to a bad start and all one can do is hope that situations will get better before they get words.
