Manchurian Candidate

A Manchurian candidate is a person, especially a politician, being used as a puppet by an enemy power. The term is commonly used to indicate disloyalty or corruption, whether intentional or unintentional.[1] The term comes from a 1959 novel of the same name. There is a newly released book entitled “Kompromat: How Russia Undermined American Democracy” by Jeff Pegues. Essentially the book states that Trump was manipulated by the KGB through financial dealings going as far back as the 1970s and the enticement of doing business in Russia into becoming a Manchurian Candidate for Putin. Looking back on his actions beginning even before he was elected president, it would certainly seem so.

Trump is, in my opinion, by definition a tyrannical fascist. Through his rhetoric he struck a chord with[2] a large segment of US society frustrated by the liberal policies enacted by previous administrations that were felt to have been detrimental to them. Trump’s harsh and crude attacks on what he termed the “deep state”[3] resonated with those mostly middle-class Americans who believed him. Among these vocal supporters have been fringe groups, such as QAnon[4], and militants such as Proud Boys[5]. It is alarming the sitting members of Congress actually support their views.

The beliefs and actions of Trump and his supporters and enablers remind me very much of Europe in the 1930s when Hitler and the Nazis came to power. They played on similar emotions of the German population who blamed Jews and others for the problems the country encountered especially after WWII. The Nazis were able to take over the country because a majority of the German citizens either agreed or acquiesced to their policies. Hitler was democratically elected and then afterwards systematically took over the country.

In America Trump and his supporters have virtually taken over the Republican Party, also known as GOP (Grand Old Party), and they are now forcing out traditional and moderate Republicans, those who disagree with Trump, just as Hitler's Nazis eliminated any who opposed Hitler and his views. The parallels are strikingly similar and frightening as history has a tendency to repeat itself and I fear what is happening now in America could also have negative results. It is too soon to tell whether President Biden will be able to allay and repair the divisions in society through his appeals for unity, but I sincerely hope he will. Only time will tell.
